Lyman Richardson built and managed the first Volcano House Hotel on the Big
Island in 1866 before coming to Wai'anae. Mr. Richardson was the first Manager
of Wai'anae Sugar Plantation and built the home shown above. In 1910, plantation
Frederick Meyer built a new mansion which is still standing today.
The Wai'anae District (site number: 80-07-1181, Tax key 8-5-02:19.22.24.25) was listed in The National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1974. The National Register of Historic Places, kept by the National Park Service, which encompasses significant properties nominated by State and Federal agencies, historic areas in the National Park System and all National Historic Landmarks. It is the official list of the country's cultural resources. The Wai'anae Plantation Manager's House (site number 80-07-9993, Tax key 8-5-03:11) was listed in The Hawai'i Register of Historic Places on February 20, 1979. The Hawai'i Register of Historic Places, kept by The State Historic Preservation Division formally recognizes districts, sites, structures, buildings and objects and their significance in Hawai`i's history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. |
